The Mandela Rhodes Foundation has announced the opening of applications for the prestigious Mandela Rhodes Scholarships for African Students 2023-24. The scholarship program is a fully funded opportunity for African students to pursue a 1-year Honours Degree Program or 2-year Masters Degree Program in South Africa.

Established in 2003, the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship program is named after two influential figures in South African history, Nelson Mandela and Cecil Rhodes, with the aim of fostering leadership and building academic excellence in Africa. 

The scholarship has supported over 300 scholars from across the continent to date and is highly sought-after by young African leaders and scholars.The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship 2023-24 is open to all African nationals aged between 19 to 30 years old, who hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with academic qualifications, and have demonstrated leadership skills and abilities in their community, school, university or workplace. Applicants must also be committed to promoting reconciliation, education, and entrepreneurship in their communities and have a record of community service and volunteer work.


The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition and registration fees at an accredited institution in South Africa. 

as well as economy class flights to and from the university, housing in a furnished apartment or residence hall, a monthly allowance to cover utilities and other living expenses, a stipend to cover expenses such as food, transportation and other personal expenses, an annual allowance for books and other educational materials, and participation in a comprehensive leadership development program.To apply for the scholarship, applicants must complete an online application form and provide certified copies of their ID or passport, official academic transcripts or records of results, a detailed curriculum vitae, two reference letters from academic or professional referees, a personal statement outlining their academic and leadership achievements, goals, and community involvement, and proof of English language proficiency if applicable.

The deadline for applications is April 21, 2023, and shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in an interview and further assessment of their leadership potential.
