Unstable Political Situation in Islamabad Throws Education System

Islamabad's education system faced severe disruption on Wednesday following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 9.

This unexpected turn of events created an unstable political climate, leaving the education department in disarray and struggling to provide clear guidance. As a result, schools and colleges witnessed minimal attendance, with only a handful of brave students defying the uncertain circumstances.

Parents, concerned about the safety of their children, opted to keep them at home amidst the unpredictable and potentially unsafe conditions. This cautious approach, coupled with the lack of transportation services provided by educational institutions, led to an unprecedented lack of attendance. Without school buses dispatched to pick up students, many were left with limited means of commuting to their schools and colleges. Consequently, teachers found themselves waiting in empty classrooms, further exacerbating the already abysmal attendance rate. This unfortunate situation sheds light on the absence of effective leadership and decision-making within the federal education department.

Parents expressed frustration and voiced their concerns over the security of their children.

They emphasized that the education department should have promptly announced the closure of schools and colleges to prevent students from being left in a state of uncertainty and ensure their safety during this politically turbulent period.

When approached for comment, Ms. Riffat Jabeen, the Director (Academics) of the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE), explained that the education department's hands were tied until they received directives from the Ministry regarding the closure of institutions. Her statement underscores the need for better coordination and communication between relevant authorities to avoid confusion and ensure the safety and well-being of students.ATimely decision-making, effective communication, and proactive measures are essential for restoring a sense of normalcy and ensuring uninterrupted education for students.
